PayVolution 2023
The 8th edition of the Salone dei Pagamenti took place from November 22 to 24, 2023, at Allianz MiCo in Milan. Organized by ABI and ABIServizi, the event attracted over 10,000 participants, including professionals from banking, fintech, public administration, and academia. The conference featured more than 70 sessions and workshops, with over 400 speakers discussing the latest trends in payment innovation.

- Digital Payment Innovations: Mastercard introduced new technologies such as Garmin Pay, Click to Pay, and GeoSpending Insight, aiming to enhance user experience and security in digital transactions.
- Startup and Fintech Focus: The “Agorà del Futuro” area provided a platform for startups and scale-ups to showcase their solutions, emphasizing the importance of emerging technologies like AI and machine learning in the financial sector.
- Sustainability and ESG: Discussions centered on the role of ESG factors in creditworthiness assessments and the integration of sustainability into banking operations.
Thales: Driving the Future of Digital Payments
At the 2023 Salone dei Pagamenti in Milan, Thales Italia showcased its commitment to digital transformation and environmental sustainability in the banking sector. The company highlighted the growing importance of ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) principles in financial services, particularly through the production of eco-friendly payment cards. Globally, Thales holds a 25% market share in payment card issuance and 45% in Italy, with 50% of the cards issued in 2023 made from recycled or biodegradable materials such as ocean plastic and corn-based polymers.
Thales is also actively engaged in recycling expired cards and aims to reduce virgin plastic use entirely. With more than 40 years of presence in Italy and over 650 employees, the company continues to innovate while meeting the highest standards of security, including a strong focus on cybersecurity.
CEO Donato Amoroso emphasized Thales’ mission to develop solutions aligned with citizens’ needs and a sustainable future. Speaking at the event and in the interview with Affari Italiani, he noted the company’s leadership in producing and personalizing banking cards, and how such tools can drive both digital and ecological transition. Amoroso highlighted the Salone as a valuable space for cross-industry collaboration and visibility, especially for companies like Thales that integrate social responsibility into their technological advancements.
