PayVolution 2024

The 9th edition of the Salone dei Pagamenti - PayVolution was held from November 27 to 29, 2024, at Allianz MiCo in Milan. The event set a new attendance record with over 14,000 visitors, reflecting the growing interest in payment innovation and digital transformation. With seven key thematic areas, the event offers a roadmap to the future of finance and technology, gathering industry leaders, fintechs, public institutions, and innovators under one roof.

Key Focus Areas of 2024:

  1. Future Payments Beyond Today: PSD3, SEPA evolution, and Open Finance are at the heart of this track, aiming to redefine sustainable business models in an increasingly interconnected global market.
  2. AI Innovation Meets Responsibility: Artificial Intelligence and generative AI are no longer distant visions but everyday tools. This area tackles the tension between innovation and ethical regulation, with strong attention to cybersecurity, data privacy, and the EU AI Act.
  3. Payments as a Tool for Social Sustainability: This track explores how digital payment systems can promote inclusion across generations and regions, aligning with ESG goals and supporting public administration via PNRR investments.
  4. Phygital Retail & Omnichannel Strategy: From in-store experiences to mobile commerce, this area examines how embedded payments and unified customer journeys are reshaping the consumer landscape.
  5. B2B Payment Speed Meets Integrations: Efficiency and interoperability in cross-border payments, ERP integration, and invoice reconciliation are central topics for transforming corporate transactions.
  6. Digital Currency & Regulation: The path to the digital Euro and the rise of DeFi require a delicate balance between central bank policy and technological advancement. This theme focuses on digital wallets, CBDCs, and the evolution of retail finance.
  7. The Innovation Agora: A collaborative lab for experimentation, the Agora brings together startups, academic researchers, fintech pioneers, and banks to co-create the finance of tomorrow.

  • Digital Euro and Regulatory Changes: Sessions addressed the implications of the forthcoming digital euro and the impact of new regulations on instant payments, highlighting the need for banks to adapt to a rapidly changing regulatory environment.

Thales: Driving the Future of Digital Payments

At the 2024 edition of the Salone dei Pagamenti, held at Allianz MiCo in Milan, Thales once again takes center stage as a key innovator in the financial technology landscape. The company introduces its Thales D1 platform, a cutting-edge SaaS (Solution as a Service) designed to support banks on their journey toward full digital transformation.

With virtual cards projected to reach a global market value of $174 billion by 2028, Thales D1 enables instant card reissuance, streamlining a process that traditionally took days. The platform also emphasizes personalized digital notifications, enhancing customer experience by aligning alerts with user preferences.

Sustainability remains key: 50% of Thales’ cards now use recycled or biodegradable materials, with initiatives like a card recycling pilot in Brazil reinforcing its environmental commitment.

In an interview with Wall Street Italia, Simone Suriano, Digital Payment Sales Director at Thales, highlighted how D1 empowers banks to engage customers digitally while cutting issuance times and boosting operational flexibility.

Thales continues to lead, producing nearly half of all payment cards in Italy, and 25% globally, blending innovation, inclusion, and sustainability in the digital payment revolution.
