La Signora delle Comete by Tommaso Tirelli tells the extraordinary story of Amalia Ercoli Finzi, one of the most pioneering Italian aerospace engineers. A professor at the Politecnico di Milano, she has been a central figure in some of the most ambitious and groundbreaking space missions of recent decades, including the Rosetta mission, which made history by landing the Philae probe on a comet for the first time. The book blends scientific exposition with personal narrative, providing insight into her role in spacecraft design, her technical innovations, and the teamwork and leadership necessary for such high-stakes projects, while celebrating her persistence, curiosity, and the ability to inspire future generations—particularly in STEM, where female voices have historically been underrepresented.

Tirelli situates Ercoli Finzi’s story within the broader context of Italian aerospace and the evolution of space exploration programs, offering a window into the environment at the Politecnico di Milano, where teaching, mentoring, and cutting-edge research intersect. The book details the challenges of the Rosetta mission, from the precise engineering required to navigate millions of kilometers through space to the creative problem-solving that allowed humanity to reach and study a comet in unprecedented detail. More than a technical achievement, the mission is framed as a testament to human ingenuity, resilience, and collaboration across cultures, disciplines, and generations.

I have personally attended several of Amalia Ercoli Finzi’s seminars and presentations, experiences that were both inspiring and illuminating. In particular, I remember the joint seminar with Giuseppe Cataldo, NASA aerospace engineer, at the Politecnico di Milano in October 2022. Her clarity, enthusiasm, and depth of insight were immediately evident. What impressed me most was her ability to transform complex challenges into opportunities for learning and discovery, demonstrating that science is as much about vision, curiosity, and mentorship as it is about formulas and calculations.

La Signora delle Comete is more than a biography or technical account; it is a book that informs, inspires, and humanizes the extraordinary world of space exploration. It shows that behind every historic mission are individuals whose intelligence, creativity, and courage shape our understanding of the universe. For me, it reinforced the belief that ambition, curiosity, and dedication are as vital as technical skill in achieving remarkable things, and it left a lasting impression of how passion and perseverance can open doors to the stars.
